Today, the Executive Committee, the players and the members of Ruairí Óg CLG are saddened to learn about the passing of club stalwart, Charlie Mc Alister or ‘Postie’ as he was affectionately known. He served the club throughout his life as a player, committee member, coach and manager of multiple juvenile and senior teams. Anyone ever lucky enough to be coached or managed by Charlie at any level will testify to the great enthusiasm, knowledge and positivity he brought to the role and the lasting impression he made on them not only as hurlers passing on his love of the game, but also as people in how they lived their lives and how they interacted with others. That is the point - Charlie’s teams won trophies including senior hurling championships producing many great hurlers through the different eras, but more importantly he was instrumental in developing those same players as people who contributed in a meaningful way to their local community and beyond. Charlie the hurling man was widely respected within his own club, his own county and by many in counties further afield.
Charlie was a devoted family man and today we grieve with Margaret, his wife, his sons, his daughters, his grand-children and the extended family. We also remember in a special way Cathal, his son and former Ruairí Óg hurler who died so tragically in a car accident back in 1991. We offer our sincere condolences to all the family. And we also take the time to remember and celebrate the life of a man who contributed so much to our club in so many ways – rest easy Charlie.
