Mc Quillan’s V Ruairi Og
Ruairi Og took on their great rivals Mc Quillan’s knowing that a victory would see them top the league section of The Darragh Cup and they started with a purpose. Christy Mc Naughton won and converted a free for the opening score of the game. From the poc out Cushendall pushed forward and Eoin Allen passed the ball to Ryan Mc Cambridge who blasted a great ground stroke from 20 yards to the corner of the town net. In the seventh minute Christy Mc Naughton gathered possession, beat his man and from 35 yards fired over a tidy point from play. Saul Mc Caughan got Ballycastle off the mark in the 11th minute with a free and he doubled their tally 2 minutes later again from a placed ball. However this was as good as it got for Ballycastle in the opening half as Cushendall settled into the game. In the final 15 minutes of the half the Dall played some great stuff with good running off the ball a feature of their play. Christy Mc Naughton(0-3), Ryan Mc Cambridge(0-2), Eoin Allen, Alex Delargy and Cormac Mc Clafferty all fired over points to leave the score at half time Cushendall 1-10 Ballycastle 0-2.
Any hopes Ballycastle had of a comeback in the second half were quickly put to bed, inside the opening 5 minutes. First Cormac Mc Clafferty found Eoin Allen who fired to the roof of the Castle net from 14 yards. A minute later Allen returned the favor when he picked out Cormac Mc Clafferty who lashed an unstoppable shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net to put the game beyond Ballycastle. Cormac Mc Alister lashed over a 65’ and that man Christy Mc Naughton got in on the act with another cracking goal. As the game drew to a conclusion Cushendall really turned on the style with a succession of excellent points including a couple of fantastic scores from Ryan Mc Cambridge and an Eoin Allen goal to leave the final score Ruairi Og 5-19 Mc Quillan’s 0-3.
How they played: Cushendall were always on top with an excellent team performance, Paddy Burke and David Kearney were rock solid at the back and further forward Eoin Allen, Christy Mc Naughton and Cormac Mc Clafferty were all dangerous but my man of the match goes to Ryan Mc Cambridge who gave an exhibition of high fielding and point taking, he battled hard for every ball and finished the game with a fine tally of 1-5 all from play.
